“How do people improve their skills?”
A fascinating and thoughtful discussion on the nature of craft and skill between sociologist Richard Sennett, artist Grayson Perry and host Laurie Taylor of BBC Radio 4. Sennett argues that contrary to the popular belief that we live in a knowledge and skills-based economy, we’re currently witnessing the large scale “de-skilling” of individuals as we become less engaged with the process of making. The practice of good craftsmanship applies to the computer programmer, artist, parent and citizen.
According to Sennett and Perry, making is thinking, and an active process engaged in making and materials leads to good citizenship and a more democratic, civil society.
