Here’s a great resource on the different types of servo motors available. We’ll be shielding our microcontrollers so that they can take up to two motors per board. We’re also playing with both stepper and servo motors. The motor we’re working with right now is this little guy; it’s a continuous rotation servo that rotates either completely forwards or backwards w/o hiccups. This is important since we’ve always envisioned the motion to be more subtle and sensuous. Nothing spastic or hyperactive; we’re thinking calm (deep-sleep like) breathing, slow pulses, stretches and sags…though maybe the occasional burp might be okay!
